How To Do A Pull Up For Females – A Complete Guide

If there is ONE exercise that men love to rub in the face of the ladies, it has to be the pull up.  Yes, it is a tough exercise BUT that doesn’t mean the ladies can’t do them!

“How do I do a pull up?” and “how do I do a chin up?” are two questions that I am proud to be getting more and more frequently! ESPECIALLY from all of the ladies out there that have been told by a guy that “girls can’t do pull ups!” pffffff!  We’ll show them!

***There is a video a bit further down…  but read the little bit of info before it, and learn how to do a pull up for a girl ! ! !   Don’t worry guys…this same progression works for you as well 🙂

For those of you who have followed my social media accounts, you may know that I am a HUGE fan of body weight training.

Just because I’m not throwing around lots of weight, don’t let that fool you for one minute! Body weight training can be VERY tough and challenging and that is what I have been doing for many months with my own body.

Sharing many of those same ‘do anywhere’ body weight exercises is what helped me to build a pretty large Instagram following.  Body weight exercises are also what my Rev-4 DVD is all about!

“Do you workout with just your own body weight or do you use weights?”

Natalie jill pull upThat is a question I seem to get on a daily basis now.

Here is my answer- I do PRIMARILY body weight exercises but don’t let that fool you! They are CHALLENGING.

The key is to progress the exercises.  When something gets too easy, there are countless ways to make it harder.

Conversely, if something is too hard, there are countless ways to make it easier so that you can ‘progress’ to doing the full exercise properly.

Staples in my workout are pull ups, handstand pushups, plank based moves, and plyometrics.

What I LOVE about body weight workouts is they truly can help you to PROGRESS and PROGRESSION is ultimately what CHANGES your body.

When I train, I forget the reps, and I forget the time.  I focus on challenging myself to progress to the next level on everything I do!

My FAVORITE body weight exercise is PULL UPS.  They provide a serious workout and they CHANGE your body and truly make you stronger.

Believe it or not, a little over a year ago I could not do a single pull up!  Nope, not a one!

It was about that time I was working with my good friend Ari on the content for the program that became the 12 week super shred and I realized that I not only needed to get my butt in gear, but that I could be a ‘guinea pig’ to demonstrate what was possible!

After all, I couldn’t do ONE single pull-up.  I was a ‘Chiseled Marshmallow‘ that was on a mission to change my body.  Enter the PULL UP!

Now a picture says a 1000 words, but a VIDEO explains it, SO here you go 🙂 In this video you will learn the difference between a pull up and a chin up, and how to start as a beginner!  I forgot to mention…NO pull up machines.  Watch the video to find out how to do a pull up for girls.
