How to say NO

Do you have FOMO? FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out. I am a recovering FOMO person and I have learned a LOT from shifting my thought process here. What took me years to learn is now ingrained in me…. by saying “No” you are actually going to be able to say “Yes” a lot more.  And by the way, I didn’t make up FOMO, it’s a real thing!

If you are like many of us, saying “no” is a hard thing to do. You may feel guilty, that you are going to miss out or that you are letting someone down by declining. Does any of that sound familiar?

Less is More?

Did you know that LESS is the new MORE? It’s true! We have all been guilty of saying, “Yes” when instead we should have been saying, “NO.”

How to say no with Natalie Jill The other day my cousin called me on the verge of tears, stressed out beyond belief. She was on her way to attend the third baby shower that month.

All of the mommas-to-be were pregnant for the second time and all of the showers were held at fancy restaurants, where my cousin was paying not only for a gift, but also for lunch.

In addition to the financial strain this was putting on my cousin, she was also missing out on precious weekend family time with her own little one and her husband.

1. Begin with a compliment:  How Fun!  or What a great idea! That sounds wonderful!

2. Gently say no:  I’d love to do this, but I can’t right now.

3. Finish with a positive:  I’m so honored you would ask.  I know it will be great! Please keep me in mind for next time.

And, if next time still doesn’t work for you? Just say no, thank you.

What you GAIN by saying, “No”

My cousin thanked me for the advice and said, “It was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.” She is in FOMO recovery and has been practicing the art of “politely declining” ever since our chat.  She has saved herself guilt, money, and precious family time that can not be replaced.
